How do you stretch a unstretched oil on canvas painting?
I have bought a oil on canvas not knowing it was unstretched . I need to know how to stretch a canvas painting. Like i need to know the materials and how-to’s
I would not advise doing it yourself if at all possible. Call around to local frame stores to see if anyone is available who is able to stretch it.
Stretching a finished painting is similar to stretching raw canvas, but much more difficult. Raw canvas has a lot of give and stretch, while a painted canvas does not. There should have been instructions with your painting as to how the canvas should be prepared/mounted. Did you order it online? Can you contact the company that you ordered it from? There may be an alternative to actually stretching the canvas. Is this painting supposed to be stretched over supports? Is there a blank perimeter of at least one inch around the edges intended to wrap around supports? I cannot see what you have so I really think that it is best to have hands on help with the painting. I don’t want to instruct you to do something that could lead to destroying your painting. Stretching a raw canvas is something that is not easy to learn, even if I were to give you step by step instructions ( which I have tried to do on YA before).
